
These are coral reefs. The living coral produces limestone as a bi-product of its existence. This is a very interesting phenomenon that takes place.
I take interest in this because I spent 3 summers snorkeling the reefs in the Florida Keys, particularly the various reefs in John Pennengkamp Park being educated in fish identification. These reefs were intriguing to me. I am was raised in Florida, a state primarily made of the coral limestone. The fact that most of the state exists because of this tiny organism is amazing.
